Description

The Hanna HI6421-01 represents a significant advancement in benchtop meters, specifically engineered for the precise measurement of dissolved oxygen (DO) in both fresh and saltwater environments. This sophisticated instrument is built around a large, responsive touchscreen display, making it incredibly intuitive to operate. Its design is modular, consisting of a durable housing and an integrated module that accommodates two distinct types of probes: the cutting-edge optical DO probe and the reliable polarographic DO probe. This dual compatibility is a cornerstone of the device’s versatility, allowing it to adapt to a wide array of laboratory, field, and industrial applications.

The meter is more than just a measurement tool; it’s a comprehensive system that integrates advanced technology for superior performance. From its smart probe technology to its extensive data logging and connectivity features, the HI6421-01 is designed to meet the demands of modern scientific and industrial professionals who require accuracy, reliability, and ease of use.

Optical Dissolved Oxygen (opdo®) Probe: A Technological Leap

One of the standout features of the HI6421 is its inclusion of the Hanna HI7641133 optical dissolved oxygen probe, which operates on the principle of fluorescence quenching. An internal blue LED excites a Pt-based luminophore, causing it to emit a red light. The presence of oxygen molecules in the water reduces the intensity and lifetime of this luminescence, and this change is measured by a photodetector to calculate the precise DO concentration.

This technology offers several key advantages. It provides highly accurate measurements without being dependent on flow, which is a common issue with traditional polarographic probes. Furthermore, the probe is fitted with user-friendly Smart Caps (HI764113-1). These caps lock securely in place and contain pre-loaded calibration coefficients that are automatically transmitted to the probe, significantly reducing the need for frequent calibration. The Smart Caps are also designed for longevity, lasting one year from the date of first use, with the meter automatically tracking and alerting the user when a replacement is due. The sensor’s optical components are compensated for aging, ensuring stable and accurate readings over long periods.

Polarographic DO Probe: The Versatile Alternative

For users who prefer or require a different technology, the HI6421P model is equipped with the HI764833 polarographic probe. This slim and versatile probe is perfect for a wide range of dissolved oxygen measurements and is particularly useful for taking readings in small containers like test tubes and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) bottles due to its narrow design.

The polarographic probe features a platinum cathode and an Ag/AgCl anode assembly, providing robust and fast-responding measurements. It is not flow-dependent, ensuring consistent readings. The probe uses durable, oxygen-permeable PTFE membrane caps that are easily filled with electrolyte and screwed on. This model also includes a built-in thermistor temperature sensor for automatic temperature compensation, along with automatic barometric pressure compensation. For applications involving saltwater, users can manually set the salinity concentration for accurate compensation, making it an excellent tool for marine biology and aquaculture.

A Seamless and Intuitive User Experience

The Hanna HI6421-01 is defined by its user interface. The 7-inch capacitive touchscreen provides a responsive and modern feel, complete with intuitive touch keys for easy navigation. The software is designed with user-friendly icons and symbols, allowing anyone, from students to seasoned professionals, to quickly understand and operate the instrument.

The meter provides five intuitive views, allowing for flexible data visualization and analysis:

  1. Basic Measurement Configuration: A simple, clean display of real-time measurements.
  2. Simple GLP: Provides essential calibration information.
  3. Full GLP: Offers a detailed view of electrode status and calibration point details.
  4. Live Interactive Graph: Displays a dynamically updated graph of measurements over time, supporting pinch-to-zoom functionality.
  5. Tabulated Data: Presents measurements in a clean table format with date, time, and user-added notes.

Advanced Data Logging and Connectivity

The meter’s data management capabilities are a significant advantage. It can log up to 1,000,000 data points, complete with time and date stamps, making it ideal for long-term studies and continuous monitoring. Users can choose from manual, automatic, or autohold logging types and can even add sample IDs for better organization.

Data transfer is simple and efficient. The HI6421-01 features USB-A and USB-C ports for connecting a USB drive, keyboard, or printer. Log files are saved in the convenient .csv format, which can be easily imported into spreadsheets for analysis. The device also supports FTP and email for log file export via Ethernet and Wi-Fi connections, allowing for seamless integration into network-based data systems.
