Description
Introducing the Hanna HI98308 Pure Water Tester
The Hanna HI98308 Pure Water Tester (PWT) is an essential tool for anyone requiring precise and reliable measurements of water purity. This rugged, pocket-sized device is engineered to provide quick and accurate readings, making it a go-to instrument for both laboratory and industrial settings. Designed by Hanna, a leader in analytical instruments, the HI98308 combines advanced features with user-friendly operation, ensuring that even non-technical users can achieve dependable results. Its compact form factor and durable casing provide excellent protection, allowing it to withstand the demands of harsh industrial environments.
Principle of Measurement: Conductometric Technology
The HI98308 determines water purity through a conductometric measurement. Electrolytic conductivity (EC) is a measure of a solution’s ability to conduct an electrical current, which is directly related to the concentration of dissolved ions. In simple terms, the more impurities (or ions) present in the water, the higher its conductivity. The HI98308 is specifically calibrated for very low-range EC measurements, with a range of 0.0 to 99.9 µS/cm and a resolution of 0.1 µS/cm. This specialized range is perfect for testing distilled, demineralized, and pure water, where even minimal contamination can affect processes or product quality.
Advanced Electrode and Temperature Compensation
A key component of the HI98308’s design is its amperometric graphite electrode. Unlike traditional electrodes that can oxidize, graphite is a non-oxidizing material, which provides better repeatability in measurements. Oxidation can change both the surface area and the distance between the two pins, leading to inaccuracies. By using non-oxidizing graphite pins, the HI98308 maintains an optimal surface for providing accurate and reliable results over time. The device also features an exposed temperature probe. This design choice allows the probe to quickly respond to changes in sample temperature, enabling the Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) feature to function efficiently. The ATC automatically adjusts the EC reading based on the temperature, ensuring measurements are accurate even when the sample temperature fluctuates between 0 and 50°C (32 to 122°F).
Practical Applications Across Industries
The versatility of the HI98308 makes it an indispensable tool across numerous fields. Its ability to quickly and accurately check water purity is vital for quality control and process management. Specific applications where the PWT excels include:
- Printed Circuit Board Washing: Ensuring pure water is used to prevent residue buildup that could cause short circuits.
- Laundry and Steam Cleaning: Verifying water quality to avoid mineral deposits on machinery and ensure effective, spotless cleaning.
- Car Battery Water: Testing water purity is critical to prevent damage to the battery’s internal components and ensure proper function.
- Laboratory and Industrial Environments: For any process where distilled or demineralized water is a key component, such as in chemical mixing or equipment sterilization.
Simple Calibration and Maintenance
Calibration of the HI98308 is a simple, one-point manual process. To calibrate, you simply immerse the electrode tip into an 84 µS/cm calibration solution (such as the HI 7033M or HI 7033L) and use the supplied screwdriver to adjust the calibration trimmer on the side of the meter until the display reads “84.0”. The device is powered by four 1.5V alkaline batteries , which provide approximately 250 hours of continuous use. It also includes the Battery Error Preventing System (BEPS), which automatically turns the meter off when battery levels are low to prevent inaccurate readings.
Durability and Warranty
The HI98308 is built to last. It is housed in a durable casing and has dimensions of 175 x 41 x 23 mm (6.9 x 1.6 x 0.9”), and weighs just 95 g (3.4 oz.). It is guaranteed for one year against defects in workmanship and materials when used for its intended purpose. The probes, a key component, are guaranteed for six months. For probe replacement or other services, users should contact their dealer or the nearest Hanna Service Center.
